Free Health Care in Europe Will Continue After Brexit - Pledge

British tourists have been reassured by Brexit Secretary David Davis that travellers in the European Union will continue to get free healthcare after the UK formally leaves the EU.

The Brexit Secretary said he will seek a continuation of the existing European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) system in forthcoming negotiations, and vowed to offer EU citizens free access to the NHS in return.

And he said that if Brussels reject his pledge, the UK Government will cover the cost on behalf of its citizens.

The Brexit Secretary told the Andrew Marr show: “We are looking to see if we can get a continuation of the EHIC scheme as it now exists. Of course, if we can't get one then we will provide one unilaterally, but that is what we are looking to.

“We are trying to ensure that every individual citizen gets their current position as it were, locked in place for them, so that the anxiety can go.”

UK travellers can use their free EHIC cards in all 27 EU countries, as well as Iceland, Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein, so they do not face huge hospital bills if they fall ill abroad.

The programme ensures UK citizens receive the same state healthcare as local citizens, including prescriptions, GP visits and hospital stays.

The current EHIC card system remains in place for almost two years, and new cards will be reissued up until then. A word of warning though, the card has to be ordered online but make sure you are using the Official website. A colleague got his EHIC card recently - after paying £35 to an unofficial provider!
