American Independence Day Festival on Tuesday

There's a festival for all the family at the Ulster American Folk Park to mark American Independence Day next Tuesday (July 4).

Highlights will include historical re-enactments transporting visitors back in time to the 1770s.

The American Independence celebrations mark the beginning of the Ulster American Folk Park’s summer programme. This summer the museum will be open every day in July and August.

Re-enactments of a public reading of the Declaration of Independence from July 1776 will take place while American War of Independence infantrymen will go through their paces throughout the day and fire a selection of black powder weapons used during the 18th century conflict.

At the Rocky Mountain Rendezvous re-enactment you can step back in time to the world of the early 1800s mountain men who came together after months apart to replenish their stocks and trade while recounting their tales over an open fire.

Visitors can also enjoy a spin on a traditional 1800s horse drawn buggy and listen to music from local group Cup O’ Joe who play an energetic style of Bluegrass with a mix of jazz, old time and swing.  There’s plenty for younger visitors too with traditional Punch and Judy Shows and a fast-paced children’s entertainment show.

Visitor Services Manager Richard Hurst said: “We’re looking forward to launching our summer season with a range of unique events marking American Independence Day.

“There is something for everyone to enjoy from drama, to music, traditional games and plenty of family fun. This event will be a great to start to the summer holidays and we’re looking forward to welcoming visitors of all ages every day in July and August.”

The popular Wellies, Songs and Stories activity will be taking place over the summer months. These special guided tours use songs, scones and stories to help make the museum lots of fun for the under fives. Meanwhile groups of over 50s can enjoy a free afternoon at the Folk Park on the third Wednesday of each month by booking in advance.

The Ulster American Folk Park is open from 10am to 5pm each day. Major event day pricing is in place for the American Independence Celebrations. The picture shows the reading of the American Declaration of Independence being re-enacted at the Folk Park.
